It’s a shocking but very true statistic that one in three people will get cancer. If you or someone you know has cancer you’ll understand that it’s the toughest thing you will have to face. The one thing that you need at that time is a team of caring professionals to help care and support you every step of the way. Macmillan Cancer Support provide practical financial and medial support for those people and as a charity they face the struggles of continually raising money to help provide these essential services.
Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the biggest British charities and was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan following the death of his own father from the disease. It was originally called the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer and went through several name changes before it was changed to reflect the role of the work that they do, being a source of support for those suffering or caring for someone suffering with cancer.
Macmillan hold fundraising events all over the country to help raise money to fund the work that they do, in fact 98% of their income is from donations. This makes fundraising an essential part of their marketing activities. Their most notable fundraising event is the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning which is held annually and has generated over £75 million since it started in 1991.
SEO Web Marketing had the good fortune of meeting some of the girls from the Macmillian Greater Manchester fundraising team whilst presenting at a seminar about search engine optimisation and social media marketing. They were fascinated to listen to the affect that social media can have, especially to an organisation such as themselves.
During the seminar we were able to explain how by using a platform such as Twitter as part of their social media marketing, Macmillan would have the potential to reach out to hundreds of thousands of people in their targeted geographical area of Greater Manchester. The power of Twitter is phenomenal and this was one thing that their fund raising team wanted to really work on.
As every member of the team at SEO Web Marketing has had cancer touch their lives in one way or another, it was an easy and obvious decision to help support the Macmillan Greater Manchester fund raising team and help them raise their profile on Twitter. We also secured sponsorship from Macmillan for future seminars that we provide, helping them to raise even more life saving money.
