Whether you are planning to apply for a job, or just training for one, networking can prove invaluable. The right network can provide valuable insight when deciding which university course will best enhance your career prospects. It can also open doors to future internships which can play a valuable role in later career development. Ultimately, having the right network can play a massive part in launching your career into the organisation or industry of your dreams.

Due to this, the social media networking company LinkedIn is now helping teenagers to shape their career at an early age with the introduction of LinkedIn University Pages. These pages are not designed to be exclusively used by teenagers. However, it is hoped that they may find the content on these new pages especially relevant and useful. From September 13th, the social media platforms age limit will be reduced to 14 in the U.S. and 13 to UK users. After this date, teenagers from this age and up will then able to sign up to LinkedIn, create a profile and interact through the LinkedIn University Pages.

LinkedIn University Pages: The Reasons Behind the Decision

LinkedIn’s Christina Allen commented on the changes: “We believe University Pages will be especially valuable for students making their first, big decision about where to attend college.” The changes will empower teenagers to make enquires about prospective universities. As part of this, they will be able to ask current students questions. The pages also enable teenagers to view the career paths of former students, and get an idea of what they can expect from their own careers after receiving their degree.

“Teenagers can use LinkedIn in order to explore schools worldwide, greatly expand their understanding of the careers available. They can then get a head start on building a network of family and friends to help guide them at every milestone,” Allen explained.

The LinkedIn University Pages will provide notable alumni, former students and graduates, from each university and college. This provides a place where future students will be able to connect with alumni. It also offers a network where graduates and former students are able to keep in touch with their former peers.

Prior to the launch of the new feature, over 200 universities have already formed a presence with the new pages on LinkedIn. Reports state that in the coming weeks and months, thousands of other educational institutions will be granted access to their pages.
